When archiving transactions by financial year, the input field/drop down
box is too small.

this feature requires that the exercises must exist. This is not the case

before archiving?

Problem solved, no financial year was defined.

However after defining a financial year, I still could not archive the
account.
Error: "Failed ! An error occurred while creating the archive... Most
probably, you are trying to create an empty archive that grisbi cowardly
refused to create."
Archiving by date (first option) for same period works ok.

I will play aroud with the dates, if I cannot solve this I will file a new
bugreport.

Sorry for my english. 
When you create a financial year you must click on the button "Associate
operations without financial years".

This button is located in the Preferences and the financial year tab. Then
only you can create an archive with the archive assistant.

In the bottom of the wizard you have the number of transactions that will
be archived. I can not upload an image. I send by mail
